CMS Advanced Materials Technology is a brand of CMS Spa, an SCM Group company, and is a leader in the field of machine tools for processing advanced and composite materials. It has established itself as a technology partner in sectors of excellence such as Formula 1, automotive, aerospace, race boating, and the most advanced railway industry.
In 2018, the company, based in Zogno in the province of Bergamo, began developing, in collaboration with the prestigious German institute Fraunhofer Iwu, a LFAM (Large Format Additive Manufacturing) solution to increase competitiveness in the processing of composite materials. These four years of research culminated in the recent launch of CMS Kreator, a hybrid 3D printing and composite milling machine. With this machine, in collaboration with Bercella srl, a leading company in the design and engineering of advanced solutions in composite materials, the molds for the car of the RestoMod 2021 project, sponsored by Tomaso Trussardi, have been produced. The car will be presented during the Motor Valley Fest, scheduled in Modena from July 1 to 4. The event will be an international showcase supported by the agreement for the promotion of Made in Italy, shared by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, ICE Agency, with the Emilia Romagna Region and APT Servizi Emilia Romagna for the promotion abroad and the internalization of Italian companies.
Giovanni Negri, CEO of CMS SpA, explains: “We are particularly proud to be part of this extraordinary project. Sustainability and production flexibility are the keywords that we shared with Franco Bercella four years ago, when we talked about the enormous opportunities that a special Additive Manufacturing solution for large formats could bring to the composite materials sector. The RestoMod Project is starting to get us to touch on these opportunities.”
“This is the first car made with this technology — Franco Bercella, founder of Bercella Srl, continues — it is an important moment, we are marking the “zero point” in the field of composite materials. The occasion is absolutely prestigious: Tomaso Trussardi’s project is allowing us to show the future. As an entrepreneur and industry enthusiast, I can say it’s a dream that comes true.”
This Additive Manufacturing technology allows to make a first important step towards a sustainable technology in the view of a circular economy for material reuse, and to strongly increase the flexibility and speed of production of composite parts.
Tomaso Trussardi, MVF Ambassador, co-investor and project manager, adds: “I would like to say a huge thank you to all the partners who have been committed and devoted themselves to Motor Valley Fest and the RestoMod Project. It was an important collaboration that directly involved companies, but not only. The innovation farm in Fornovo and the Dallara Academy have made it possible to involve students, which will be the technical specialists of the near future. What united us all was the passion for Made in Italy and for the excellence we are able to achieve. The collaboration between Bercella and CMS represents this: thanks to them, the RestoMod project is a real revolution in the field of composites for racing.”
